The Ministry of Economic Development (MISE) is responsible for a wide variety of policies for economic development and cohesion. The Ministry promotes research and industrial technological innovation and technological transfer. It is responsible for industrial policies in key sectors for the economic development, ranging from the design and implementation of internationalisation policies, SME policies and business incentives, to energy and mineral resources management, the development of telecommunications infrastructures and of information and communication technology (ICT) smart services and applications. In the domains of the EC research, major actions undertaken by the Ministry include:
- contributing, fostering and supporting research and innovation activities encompassing different sectors, also through projects in partnership with Universities and Research Institutions;
- contributing in study groups within international organizations for the development of international standards;
- carrying out statistical studies and analyses regarding the economic and social growth at national level.
The MISE also undertakes actions aimed at preserving and enhancing cultural heritage, through its Cultural Centre and the annexed Museum of History of Communication.
In conjunction with other public administrations, the Ministry is also involved in designing equal opportunities and welfare at work policies, through its Committee for equal opportunities, wellbeing at work and against discriminations.
Key personnel
Mauro Fazio – male - received the M.Sc degree in Economics from the University of Rome "La Sapienza" in 1984 and the Banking specialization in the same year. Since 1985 he has been with the Ministry of Communications (now Ministry of Economic Development), serving as director of the Statistics Office since 1996. Since June 2009 he has been serving as director of the Head of Department Office of the Department of Communications within the MISE. For more than twenty years, Mr. Fazio has been involved in international activities in the telecommunication sector, with increasing responsibilities gained over time. He has been Coordinator of the EC Project CIVIC EPISTEMOLOGIES (FP7 Infrastructures). He is currently responsible for the preparation of the budget and for the strategic, operational and financial plan of the Ministry of Economic Development. He is also involved in activities for the development of the Cultural Centre of the Ministry of Economic Development, and its Museum of History of Communication.
Anna Caterina Carli received the M.Sc. degree (with honours) in Telecommunication Engineering from Politecnico di Milano, Milan, Italy, in 2003, the License as a Professional Engineer from the University of Bologna, Italy, in 2005, and the Ph.D. degree in Machine Learning from the University of Verona, Italy, in 2012. In 2010, she was a visiting researcher at Instituto de Telecomunicações and the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Instituto Superior Técnico, Technical University of Lisbon, Portugal. She is currently an officer of the Ministry of Economic Development, Rome, Italy. Her research interests include Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Data Science, Digital Humanities, Computational Social Science. She received the Best Student Paper Award at the International Conference on Pattern Recognition Applications and Methods (ICPRAM) in 2012. In 2010-2012 she was member of the Italian delegation in the European Conference of Postal and Telecommunications Administrations (CEPT) Working Group on Frequency Management (WG-FM) and in the CEPT Conference Preparatory Group Project Team D (CPG-PTD) for the preparation of the World Radiocommunication Conference 2015 (WRC-15). In 2013-2016, she was a member of the International Telecommunication Union, Standardization Sector (ITU-T) Study Group on Multimedia coding, systems and applications.
