Since its establishment in 1947, the Institute of Mathematics and Informatics at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (IMI—BAS) has been a leading Bulgarian centre for research in Mathematics, Computer Science and their interdisciplinary applications. Current research activities include approaches to technology-supported services for the needs of humanities and social sciences; providing innovative methods and tools for attaining knowledge on cultural objects; generating means and resources for access and improved use of the rich cultural heritage (including large datasets, data flow in social media). IMI—BAS’s teams work actively on creating, integrating and developing digital environments for managing cultural content with applications and services for personalised, adaptive and context-based access to their resources; services for ubiquitous delivery of cultural resources; e-learning; storytelling; serious games; etc. The work is focused on research and applications for data management, processing, analytics, mining, visualization, information sharing and retrieval, and knowledge discovery in diverse digital cultural environments.
The Institute has extensive experience in successful participation and coordination of projects, inter alia within FP6, FP7, Horizon 2020, and other European programmes.
IMI—BAS is the main organizer of the International conferences “Digital Presentation and Preservation of Cultural and Scientific Heritage” (DiPP), under the patronage of UNESCO and with the support of the Bulgarian Ministry of Education and Science, providing an open access to all contributions.
